Zrmanja rafting & kayaking: the river day beyond Zadar
Leave the sea behind for one day. Clear water, limestone walls and a guided descent turn the Zrmanja into one of northern Dalmatia’s most memorable active escapes.
Quick answer
Quick answer: Zrmanja rafting & kayaking: the river day beyond Zadar
Plan this as a guided river day rather than an independent paddle. The protected white-water section runs from Kaštel Žegarski towards Muškovci; official regional material describes a common 14-kilometre itinerary with around four hours on the water. In higher water it may be rafting, while summer usually means inflatable kayaks. Allow roughly one hour to reach the starting area from Villa Lostura, then follow the exact instructions from your chosen licensed operator.
A different kind of blue
Most days at Lostura begin with the Adriatic somewhere in view. A Zrmanja day turns inland instead: towards pale karst, green-blue river water and a canyon that makes the coast feel much farther away than it really is.
The pleasure is in the contrast. Breakfast in the garden, a morning drive into northern Dalmatia, several hours moving with the river — and then back to your own pool, sauna and table in Kožino. It feels like a complete expedition without changing accommodation or losing the evening.
One river day. A completely different Dalmatia.
Rafting in spring. Kayaking in summer.
“Zrmanja rafting” is the familiar search, but it is not a promise for every date. Water level determines the experience. A licensed local operator explains that raft boats are generally used in the higher water of spring, while stable two-person inflatable kayaks usually take over from June as the river becomes lower.
Rafting energy
More water can mean a larger raft and a livelier group rhythm. Spring is the usual rafting window, but current conditions — not the calendar alone — make the final decision.
Kayak closeness
In summer, smaller inflatable kayaks bring you closer to the water and keep the same canyon day alive when traditional rafting is not appropriate.
Do not select the holiday date on the assumption that one craft is guaranteed. Ask the operator what the current water level means for your group and let the guide choose the safe format.
What the classic upper-river day looks like
Kaštel Žegarski to Muškovci
The designated section moves from the village bridge into a changing landscape of calmer reaches, rapids, tufa barriers and waterfalls. Veliki Buk is the visual climax — an 11-metre waterfall that guided groups go around rather than paddle over.
Tour formats and measured distances vary by operator.
Add briefing, changing and transfer logistics.
Use the operator’s exact meeting point and live navigation.
There is enough calm water to learn the stroke and enough movement to make the day feel like an adventure. Many organised tours welcome beginners, but this remains a real river: listen closely at the briefing, wear every item of safety equipment and follow the guide at each rapid, waterfall and portage.
The Lostura rhythm for a Zrmanja day
Breakfast, water, dry clothes
Start before the strongest heat. Pack swimwear, a quick-dry layer, secure water shoes, sun protection, a towel, drinking water and a complete dry change. Confirm food and drink arrangements with the operator.
Briefing before bravado
Your operator supplies the tour’s boat and core safety kit, commonly including a helmet, buoyancy aid and a waterproof container. Ask in advance whether a wetsuit, transfer or meal is included.
Leave room for a late lunch
Changing, vehicle transfers and a relaxed stop can extend a “four-hour paddle” into most of the day. Avoid a tight dinner reservation and let the return remain easy.
Pool. Sauna. Dinner beneath the trees.
The best finish is private: recover in the wellness area, open something cold and let dinner beneath the trees carry the evening.

Who this day is for
It works especially well for families with active older children, two couples, a group of friends or guests building a week around more than beaches. First-time paddlers can often join, but “beginner-friendly” never replaces an honest check of swimming ability, mobility, health, age and confidence around moving water.
If someone in the group would rather stay dry, make the choice without pressure. Lostura also works beautifully as the quiet half of the day — garden, pool and shade for one guest; canyon and paddle for another.

Good to know
Questions, answered.
Is Zrmanja better for rafting or kayaking?
The river decides. High-water conditions commonly allow rafting, especially in spring, while the lower summer flow is usually explored in stable inflatable kayaks. Your licensed operator confirms the craft and whether the tour can run for your date.
Can beginners join a Zrmanja rafting or kayaking tour?
Many commercial tours are designed for first-time paddlers, with a guide, briefing and safety equipment. Age, swimming ability, fitness and health rules vary by operator, so every guest should confirm suitability directly before booking.
How long is the Zrmanja trip from Villa Lostura?
Allow roughly one hour by car from Kožino to the usual upper-river starting area, plus the operator’s check-in time. Official tourism material describes a common 14-kilometre guided route and around four hours on the river, but the exact meeting point, distance and duration depend on the chosen tour and conditions.
Can we paddle the protected Zrmanja route independently?
No. Velebit Nature Park states that independent descents are not permitted on the designated Kaštel Žegarski–Muškovci section. Book a licensed organiser and follow the guide’s instructions.
What happens if the water level or weather is unsuitable?
The operator may change the craft, alter the plan, postpone or cancel. Velebit Nature Park can also suspend rafting and kayaking when low water could damage the river habitat or its tufa-forming processes.
Does Villa Lostura organise or sell Zrmanja tours?
No. This is an independent day-trip recommendation. Guests choose, book and pay the licensed operator directly, and should use that operator’s exact meeting point, inclusions and cancellation terms.
